EBM playlist

I put together an EBM playlist for my blog. So far I've got 27 tracks on it.

Admittedly, my definition of EBM is broad (about half are techno tracks that are EBM-influenced, plus there are some I would call industrial dance), but I tried to include a little bit of everything. You're kind of limited by what you can find posted on the net or what you can upload to your own server, so I know I missed plenty of essential tracks. Still, I think people in this tribe should enjoy it (or at least parts of it).

Anybody else in complete love with The synthetic dream foundation's newest album "Behind the gates of horn and ivory"? Def. one of the best albums I have come across this year. I think they have clips of it somewhere on their site. If you don't own a copy, I highly recommend getting one.

E.B.M. mix

I'm in the process of making some Classic E.B.M. mixes. I used to spin E.B.M. back when these tracks were being released. I don't have any mixes from that time, so I've decided to make some mixes to try and document that period in my DJ career. Hopefully these mixes will convey the music and the zeitgeist. They may even help out some of you young Dj's that are thinking about spinning an old school E.B.M. set, but you're not quite sure who the artists were and what exactly a set would sound like. Cheers!

Audiovoid (LayerZ) - Industrial vs. Glitch-Funk

wanted to take a second to promote my homeboy's new album...

Audiovoid aka LayerZ presents Whispers from Shadowz: a glitch-funk meets industrial affair across 10 tracks. Audiovoid is well known in San Francisco for his thick, full-frontal aural assaults combining glitch, breaks, electro, and industrial. Think Autechre vs. Nine Inch Nails.

Whispers from Shadowz is available as an LP mp3 download for $5.00 from Fake Science Music Store:
http://us1.fakescience.com/music/audiovoidakalayerz/whispersfromshadows.php

(Streaming audio samples on the site)

You can also stream the entire first track, Slut Master, on the Fake Science Blog:
http://dicta.fakescience.com/2007/02/05/audiovoid-aka-layerz-whispers-from-shadowz/

Fake Science is dedicated to independent music.

I can't wait to go to this show tonight.

It's so rare that live industrial music ever gets played in this area
and rarer still that local bands from the Bay Area get showcased.
Please come out and show your South Bay Industrial/Goth support for this one:

WHO: C/A/T DEATHLINE INTERNATIONAL BLACK SNAKE MOAN
UNWOMAN with DJ INTONER

The Burning Beach Ball was just a fundraiser idea 3 weeks ago. It was just a means for the International DJ Guild to begin the business we set out to do 1 year ago, help DJs to get recognition, services, etc. by using the power of numbers. A month ago we became incorporated as a not-for-profit business league.

Sales opened for our first event, a 2 day party in a luxury resort, but priced affordably, with multi stages and lots of artists (DJs and bands). It's been 24 hours. Already we have far exceeded sales expectations. The event is on and people are psyched! Sales are coming in from all over the country and Canada.

See the venue map to get a feel for the size and the plan.
http://www.idjg.org/bbb/bbbmap.html

Get more information, log on, make a room request and buy tickets.
http://www.idjg.org/bbb/bbbform.php

We have a lot of rooms available for now, particularly off the venue grounds... but at this rate they will be going fast. Have a look...make your plans. Show your love.
Combi Christ and KMFDM

I have to say that I was just incredibly impressed with Combi Christ's set
at the Mezzanine over the Halloween weekend.

they opened for KMFDM and , personally, I thought they had a much better show.
It was really great to see so much drumming going on.

It seems like so many bands have electronic drum kits or just laptop run sequences
and it's so visceral to see reall heavy drumming going on.

I thought they had a wondeful show as well and I bought their I'm an electrohead/I HATE GOTH t-shirt
just to make my goth/industrial friends laugh

Great fucking show and one that was personally inspiring to me.

I'm going to be doing a show of very heavy and dark traditional MIddle Eastern rhythms with
Robin Jacobs (founding member of Switchblade Symphony on guitar) and an amazing musician, John Connell
on bass and persian Ney on
Friday NOVEMBER 17th at DEFIANCE (in Club Caution) in Santa Cruz.

I'm calling the project nO thiN-g

This combi christ show really inspired me to try out several different drumming ideas I"ve had for this show
so please tell all the people you know who are into Tribal Belly Dancing and Gothic/Industrial Belly Dancing.

It's a dance show and yet, if you have any traditional middleeastern dance training you'll love it because I"m going to
use only traditional rhythms from Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon and Persia in the show......................ALL FUCKED UP!!!!!!

Wenesday, October 18 for out of province residents.

Our online ticket sales are surpassing previous online sales for EBMfest, so
it is strongly encouraged that if you are coming out of town to BUY YOUR

Also for those that plan to buy their tickets at the doors and cash in on
the savings with costume attire.... Costumes can include both Gothic and
Industrial/Cyber club wear as well as character costumes.
We know and understand how much time, effort and money is involved to dress
up for the evening at a Gothic or Industrial club and encourage this dress
as well. What is not acceptable as costumes are blue jeans, track pants,
t-shirts and baseball caps unless you are dressed as a character!!!

$5.00 discount at doors for those that dress in costume or fashionable club

Just curious. Since "Synth pop" covers so much, and i know im asking a rhetorical question; but do we have sub-genres or what?
To be honest the only reason i came to have this run across my head was the fact that although i know a fair amount of people into EBM, i know very few, if any at all totally INTO synth pop.
Have i yet to meet the right people?? If so feel free to message me!!
I feel that EMB is in the genre Sythpop. Being synthy..well...pop.
Now, that is not to say I dont know very many people into EBM, Because I do. But when i ask the rivitheads, gravers or cybergoths if they have ever heard of say, Merge, De/Vision, KieTheVez, Droom, B!Machine, Cosmicity, Real Life (ok we know the 80's stuff!), Neuropa, KAJ....the list goes on...but anyways, those same aforementioned peeps have no clue to this side of the spectrum.
I have observed the "trancey" side to synthpop too. Being a psytrance (& 80's/synthpop) DJ i like some of it, but some of it is CHEESY. Im not 16 at a rave anymore, guys. I dont mean to be a hater cuz i like it a lot more than i am leading you to believe. And- I will admit to being a fan of anthem trance. Yay neverending-story remix!!!!!
But anyways, hope this got your noodle rolling.
Synth Pop seems to me to be an analogy to Goth in the 90's with which that "label" took on anything from Bauhaus to Depeche Mode, from Frontline Assembly to Juno Reactor.
And in my perception EMB has become the new counterpart to goth in recent times. So can you play EBM at a synthpop party or vice versa. Is ther a faux pas??

Food for thought??
New to SF! any club info would be appreciated

well not really new to sf, but relatively new to the sf club scene. here's the deal:

i'm in grad school so i don't have very much free time and also not very much money. however, i do like going out/dancing, so it would be great find out where to go, etc. i moved here from tampa a few months ago and am sort of overwhelmed by all of this 'different night/different venue' stuff. i mean back home its pretty straight forward--> THE CASTLE on fridays and saturdays (and mondays for new wave) and occasional trips to the czar (most other venues seem to tank after the first few months they are open) or ibar in orlando. although sf seems to have more options, so far most of the places ive gone have been pretty dissapointing (1984?!?! wtf?) so at this point i am just really confused. help me please, otherwise whats a girl to do??

p.s. perhaps it would be easier for you folks to point me in the right direction if i list where ive been/ what i am curious about. also i live in the city and do not have a car.

-- ive been to two new wave citys and two popp roxx. both had some decent music (on the smaller floor) but not consistantly. and weird people. dont really plan on going again unless i'm desperate.
-- the first time i was in sf, the international gothic club listing pointed me towards 1984. i havent gone back; not only was i absurdly overdressed but the place was filled with frat boys & pop music. yuck.
-- death guild: went once and may go back. actually i wasnt too impressed with the music. the djs seemed too desperate to please (playing a wide variety of songs) rather than focusing on a solid set.
--i'll save the bitching about 80s/electro/indie clubs for another time

i would like info on
die maschine / meat / the foundery / sadisco / obscure curio (strangelove, shadowplay, gossip, compulsion...)
sorry this is so long and bitchy. and thanks.

nO thiN-g at the 3 day DARK ELEKTRONIX FESTIVAL this saturday in SF

I"ll be performing at the Dark Elektronix Festival this weekend on Saturday night
as

nO thiN-g

doing a rather unusual performance which marries found sound, industrial
percussion and extended vocal techniques with live looping and electronic manipulation.

While not EBM per se, my performance will most definitely be influenced by the EBM/Goth/Industrial scene which
I've been active in for the past several years.

It's gonna be a killer festival. check it out and come up and say hi if you saw it here in tribe.

so when i first began my adventure in discovering what is EBM i had become obsessed with Velvet Acid Christ and had already been familiar with Hocico and a few others... but I am finding more and more that EBM is a fairly simplistic version of industrial, and is more clubby... anyone have any comment on this?

Just got the new VNV and Wumpscut records...excellent. Also Mindless Self Indulgence...Tom Sawyer...too funny!

The Decree album is truly disturbing. Comments on the mix?

The Vortex album from Collide is great but the song Inside should really get them a broad audiance.

The Tokyo Electric REVIVAL party

***
Friday, May 27th
~MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND~

Featuring DJ sets by Gigolo recording artists:

Inform3r + Katya Casio of
*HONG KONG COUNTERFEIT*
(Emperor Norton/Erkrang Durch Musique/Kinetik-Media/Lasergun/Gigolo)
__

Robots dancing in the night, faces flashing neon light...

Hong Kong Counterfeits latest creation is Paradisco, a full-length album released via Italys S.H.A.D.O. Records. Featuring 12 of the band best songs, it conveys a decadent and humorous mood with energetic tracks like Television Man and Frantic Love as well as a darker and more atmospheric side, including a cover of
Plastic Bertrand's 80s classic Tout Petite La Planette.

Hong Kong Counterfeit are John Langdon (a.k.a. Inform3r of Gigolo Records) and DJ/artist Katya Casio. At the time, Inform3r was working on his debut Sex Offender and Katya was designing clothes using plastic bags and left over junk from industrial factories. Her original creations have now been showcased by the NYC Downtown Costume Institute amongst famous designers and performers like Vivienne Westwood,
Klaus Nomi, Keith Harring, etc.

HKC recorded their first EP Metal Disco in 2001 which came out as a niftylooking picture disc. Fusing retro-futuristic cover-art with the sounds of electro-disco bleeps of analogue synthesizers it featured 3 original tracks plus remixes by Legowelt and Orgue Electronique whilst follow-up singles have also graced the worlds dancefloors and been remixed by such esteemed electro contempories as Savas Pascalidis, Kitbuilders, LeTigre, Man Parrish, Capri and Tampopo.

When picked up by Gigolo Records, John's Inform3r 12" broke the label mould by being the first full-colour sleeve, breaking away from the bland 90's aesthetic and subsequently fused Gigolos "body builder" logo with the head of Ziggy Stardust. Katya and John then developed the concept for INTERNATIONAL DEEJAY GIGOLOS next logo that featured Sid Vicious. Hong Kong Counterfeit also introduced the Gigolo label to their latest muse; Amanda Lepore who now graces their releases in the classic muscular pose. The duo inevitably entered the realm of video direction by co-directing the video for Tiga's Sunglasses at Night hit!

Recently, HKC saw the release of the their single 'Emotion' on Emperor Norton Records which is now being featured on L'Oreal's promotional CD-ROM for their Matrix line of products. Sculpt, control anyone?
---

Also, featuring the patrons of the Tokyo Electric sound
you all know and love:

Julian DeStrukt

Ghreg on Earth is a dynamic electronic music producer whose style defies all attempts at classification. He creates an intensely energetic & deeply atmospheric style of music; as he gracefully blends elements of industrial/EBM/Psychedelic trance and more. His experi-MENTAL sound takes the listener on a mythical journey through haunting soundscapes and unrelenting basslines. Ghreg on Earth is one of the few artists who successfully escapes the confines of "genre" and whose musical talents awe and insipre all who hear.
He will be playing tracks from his new album this Saturday at the Blue Cube, SF (www.tantrasf.com). Even if you are not a fan of psytrance, you will still love ghreg's set :)

Tokyo Dark Castle San Francisco -- Sun, Mar 6, 2005

~ Stylish Underground Entertainment

Dark Castle returns to San Francisco at the DNA Lounge for the next episode of one of today’s most exciting underground movements. Featuring international bands, DJs, Fantasy Gothic Waltzing, Gothic/Gothic Lolita Fashion Show, Gothic Bazaar, and a costume contest. These elements are combined into one action packed evening of entertainment where the audience is a much a part of the show as the performers. Dark Castle is very much a social happening where the audience expresses their creativity in the way in which they come attired. Fashion ushers in the night.

Ignited in Tokyo when Robert Blaque met Genet from Auto-Mod the Dark Castle experience was developed by Genet and Taroo, leaders of the Tokyo underground movement. A three year old world renown brisance people travel from the far reaches to attend. Gothic couples have even planed their honeymoons around Dark Castle events. Now Robert Blaque brings this delightful experience to San Francisco.

What makes TDCSF unique to other events is the infusion of Japanese cultural elements. The Japanese are famous for their uncanny ability to take on pop culture by adding their own bizarre twist. Similar in the way Anime and Manga have become a part of our culture, the Japanese eloquence is making its way to the local goth scene. One of the most striking elements is the Elegant Gothic Lolita. This courtly dressed peeress is beautiful, and mischievous much in the way one would envision a Gothic Alice in Wonderland. TDCSF is your opportunity to join in the festivities and experience these visions of dark beauty outside of Tokyo.

Sunday March 6th Tokyo Dark Castle mutates at the DNA Lounge.

Bands: Secret Secret (SF), Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (Tokyo), Mindless Faith (NYC), and Order of the Fly (San Bernardino).
DJs/MCs: MizMargo (San Francisco), Däch (Los Angeles), Robert Blaque (SF), Persephone (Berkeley).
Activities: Fantasy Gothic Waltz, Gothic Ballet, Gothic Lolita Fashion Show, Gothic Bazaar, Kosupure Contest with multiple prizes sponsored by DreamWorks, Alternative Tentacles, and Metropolis Records, San Francisco Vampire Tour.
Bazaar Vendors: See-Throo, Strange Monster, Facing Costumes, Alternative Tentacles, COP Records, Industrial Nation, Your Music Magazine, Ghastly Jack, Experimental Craftworks.
Information: Doors 8 pm, Advanced tickets $10, at the door $15, 21+ w/ ID, The DNA Lounge 375 11th St. San Francisco. Tickets available online at the DNA website:

As anybody purchased a copy of the FRONT 242 - 'catch the men' live DVD, that appears to be only available through selected retails, I'm wondering yet I think it's live and it's one of those bands that I would prefer a studio version of, but if it's a goody then it's a high ranking maybe..
See Alfa Matrix for details of it if not.

Tsunami Relief

Dear EBM Tribe Members-

You may have heard about the Tsunami that hit SE Asia. While I am new to the tribe community as a whole, I feel strongly compelled to get the word out as my family and I have plans (at this time) to be in Thailand in 2 weeks. Had this disaster hit only 2 weeks later we could have been on the beach at Phuket when it hit. Please read further for more information on how to help...

"The strongest earthquake for 40 years has claimed several thousands lives across South Asia.

Tidal waves triggered by the quake struck across the region causing widespread destruction." - SKY NEWS

"The largest earthquake to hit the planet in 40 years struck at 6:58 a.m. (local time) on Dec. 26 off the western coast of Sumatra. About 44,000 people have been reported to be killed in nine countries, including India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, following massive tsunamis, with thousands washed out to sea." - WORLDVISION

People out there need our financial help, and they need it now. As of Wednesday 29th December 2004, the "Tsunami Death Toll" stands at 60,000+. That figure is thought to rise dramatically still as more bodies are recovered from this tragic natural disaster.

There are many charities and aid agencies which have already deployed teams out to the areas affected. But due to the massive impact that these Tsumani's have created, the lives of millions of people will be affected by disease, lack of food, and more importantly, lack of fresh water.

This is not a begging letter or email. So if you can't afford to give, please feel free to get the word out, so that others who may be able to donate.
Right now there are people in South East Asia who have lost everything.
£1, $1, 1EURO, etc, is better than nothing at all.

Please feel free to add links of any charity accepting donations for this cause.

The Command Post is a newsblog that is being continuously updated to contain information regarding this disaster. More importantly it contains up to date information about where you can donate.

Fixmer/McCarthy Show Review

Went to the show in Austin last night and all I have to say is that with what we were presented with, it was awesome. I am assuming that because the band is flying to every date their gear was lacking, so to be expected everything was played off a Mac, or maybe even DAT somewhere in the back. The stage show was lacking aswell, with no lights other than what the club provided (and being a photographer I have to say that in reality there weren't any lights to speak of) or on stage visuals.

Douglas put on an awesome show though, lots of charisma and energy on stage, that he used in place of the lacking supports in the way of lights, etc. Fixmer was pretty laid back and focused on queueing the right stuff, in turn keeping him pretty tame and mellow in the back.

They played 90% Nitzer Ebb hits, which rocked beyond belief, bringing the crowd back ten years in the hay day of this genre. Well worth the drive, and drive back...

You can check out some of my shots of the show here. Enjoy.
Just thought I'd drop in to tell you about Cyber Goth Industrial.
This is the name of the station I run at both soundclick and funender with the aim of promoting underground music from this scene.
This could be your soundtrack!

If you are in a band or know someone who is, who would like to become part of the regular playlist, get in touch with me. This is the tribe, feel free to join....

Does anyone know the origin of EBM, or a website [in english] that documents the history of it?? An ex-boyfriend of mine once explained to me how EBM was "invented" in Belgium, but i'm really curious about the history of it. If anyone can point me in the direction of a book or website, or if you just happen to know a thing or two, let me know :D

I found it an OK read... it claims to list the top-13 EBM albums of all time. Interestingly, I have all of these albums, not all of these I would consider EBM, but, to each his own.

What do you guys think of this dude's list?

OK, so i think my first thread popped into my noggin...
